HBS Club of Japan

Dear HBS Alumni in Japan,

We at the Harvard Business School Club of Japan (HBS CoJ) have the mission to continuously enhance the life-long careers and lifestyles of our fellow alumni. Our aim is to find exclusive opportunities and settings that give our alumni unique experiences.

To better serve you, HBS’ alumni in Japan, we have put together a short <5min survey to solicit your input on a variety of critical topics. Your inputs will inform how we adapt the HBS CoJ across all dimensions, including: types of programming, membership fees, event formats, and our priorities. You can access the survey here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeGZpjoZI1FIwrprDyXnxcmHJYBRVtzVZDQ5IOJldzdOSRM7Q/viewform.

HBS Japan Fellowship Fund:  Investment in the Future of Japan.

The HBS Japan Fellowship (www.alumni.hbs.edu/japanfellowship) was established in 2016 by the HBS Club of Japan to support students from Japan at the school.  To date, the Fellowship has supported three students, enabling them realize their dreams to attend HBS.

An increasing number of the students from Japan attending HBS are self-sponsored, and the high cost of tuition is a hurdle many cannot afford by themselves.

To quote Ms. Nanako Yano (MBA 2018), the first recipient of the HBS Japan Fellowship “I am incredibly grateful to the alumni in Japan for their generosity, and would not have been able to pursue my MBA degree without the Fellowship.”

“I will never forget when I found out I had been awarded the fellowship. At that time, the funding concern was pressuring me every day.  Your fund enabled me to pursue my dream.”  Yasuhiro Sasago (MBA 2020)

“This fellowship has catalyzed my journey to be a business leader. All of this has been made possible because of this fellowship.  It has offered my financial and emotional freedom.”  Rena Ogura (MBA candidate 2022)

The HBS Japan Fellowship relies 100% on the contributions from alumni in Japan for its funding.  To date, over seventy alumni have generously contributed to the fund, enabling it to become a permanent Fellowship. The Fellowship is administered by the Financial Aid office at HBS, who review the applications and determine recipients based on financial need.

“Supporting fellowships for HBS students is one of the greatest gifts that one can make to Harvard Business School. The HBS Japan Fellowship is an investment in the future of Japan and our society.  I have been pleased to support this program.  I have had the opportunity to meet many of the HBS Japan Fellowship recipients and have been impressed with their commitment to make a difference in the world.”     Thierry Porte (MBA 1982)

“We are so very thrilled to have had a chance to make a small difference in supporting the life changing experience that HBS offers for students from Japan. We remain eternally grateful for the experience and networks that HBS has provided still today and very happy to do our part.  We’ve been particularly struck by the warm communications from the most recent women and men who have since activated some great careers and ventures – and proud to be a fellow alum with the next generation leaders from Japan that have enjoyed HBS.”  Miki and Jun Tsusaka (MBA 1988)

Currently the HBS Japan Fellowship has raised just over $750,000.  This enables the Fellowship fund to support one student every other year for their full two years at HBS.

The target is to be able to support two students at one time, which would provide assistance to an entering student every year.  To do this we are hoping to increase the funding of the Fellowship to over $1 million.

All contributions to the HBS Japan Fellowship Fund count toward Class Reunion and Annual Class giving.  The school has created a special link if you wish to designate your donation for this Fellowship. Donations can be made directly on-line to HBS by accessing:   www.alumni.hbs.edu/japanfellowship

The HBS Japan Fellowship is an investment in the next generation of leaders in Japan.  We appreciate your support!

Harvard Business School Japan Research Center (JRC)

Welcome to JRC and its research activities in Japan!

JRC opened in January 2002. Located in Tokyo, its primary purpose is to support HBS faculty research and case-writing activities in Japan. JRC plays an important role in helping HBS advance its activities. Through its work in Japan, facilitated by the JRC, HBS strives to deepen faculty's understanding of and exposure to Japanese management issues, trends, and practices, as well as developing locally relevant case studies and course materials for use in MBA and Executive Education programs around the world. The School is heavily involved in strengthening ties with important constituencies in Japan (including companies, universities, government, and HBS alumni) - these relationships are critical to ensuring that the School's efforts have an impact. The work of the JRC has enabled the School's faculty to identify and study important management advancements in Japan, or develop and test their ideas within a Japanese framework.
